ABOUT
In 2023, the WRI will host a meeting focused on “Optimizing the Behavioral Health and Overall Well-being of Women Living with and Vulnerable to HIV." For too long, HIV treatment success has been narrowly defined by viral suppression, despite widespread recognition that a broad array of factors contribute to well-being, especially among women. Behavioral health, including mental health and substance use, plays a primary role in women’s lives and addressing it is vital to ensuring their overall well-being.
The WRI 2023 will demonstrate the need to address the whole woman through HIV prevention, treatment, research, and policy. It will explore the role of behavioral health across settings, including substance use, throughout the lifespan, and among women of varied gender, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic experiences. It will examine the role of policy and research and seek to identify ways to use these levers to improve care and access for women living with and vulnerable to HIV. Because the WRI addresses topics through a problem-solving lens, this meeting will go beyond articulating the issues to developing a series of recommendations for how to improve behavioral health support for women living with and vulnerable to HIV.
